“Enjoy the Adventure”

With those words, my mom brought a certain illogical twist to this weekend’s horror that is Hurricane Irene. With all the jokes and debate on twitter, tumblr and everywhere else on the web, it’s easy to get caught up in the hoopla that surrounds something like this; Hurricane Irene actually arriving in the cold waters of the Northeast. Specifically, my home in New York.

There’s a certain reluctance to participate in the debate surrounding mother nature’s intrusion on our daily lives because any insight or humor you offer is superficial when faced with the very real danger and destruction most likely to occur tomorrow in the early AM.

Hurricane’s kill people, and this one will too—it already has. If you’re smart about preparing for it, you’ll be safe, and if it ends up being just an unusually windy day with a lot of rain, don’t feel unreasonable about buying all that water and the rest of the candles in the store.

You’ll feel even worse if New York is rocked with destruction and flooding, and you’re the person who didn’t believe the boy that cried wolf the second time. It will be a moment you’ll tell people about later; there will a string of blog posts about it, and an unusually active twitter populace has already started to share what’s happening.

In the meantime, make sure you have batteries, and a good book. Plug your computer in so it’s charged. Same goes for the phone. If you have an apartment out of a flood zone, offer to house your friends that aren’t so lucky. Don’t worry about every little crevice in your apartment. If your windows get knocked out, they get knocked out. Short of boarding them or throwing some tape on them to prevent shards of glass, there’s really not much you can do.

You get the idea.

Be safe.

Try and take a moment to check in on your relatives and your friends—doubly so if they’re in the storm’s massive path.

This is yet another blog post about Hurricane Irene set to arrive in New York sometime tonight.

Enjoy the adventure.

I will.
